The present invention is a method to date ceramics of an unknown age with much improved uncertainties. This method is useful for archeological dating applications and forgery detection. The fundamental approach is to empirically measure the mass of hydroxyls (MOH) on dehydrated samples in an inert (N2 atmosphere with <1 ppm H20) chamber so that mass due to water absorption is never measured. These empirical measurements allow for the determination of the relative mass gain due to hydroxylation over the life of the artifact (Mf) and the rate at which mass gain from hydroxylation occurs (α) without the uncertainty associated with water absorption.

La présente invention concerne un procédé de datation de céramiques d'âge inconnu avec des incertitudes nettement améliorées. Ce procédé est utile pour des applications de datation archéologique et la détection de falsification. L'approche fondamentale est de mesurer empiriquement la masse d'hydroxyles (MOH) sur des échantillons déshydratés dans une atmosphère inerte (N2 avec une chambre <1 ppm H20 de telle sorte que la masse due à l'absorption d'eau n'est jamais mesurée. Ces mesures empiriques permettent de déterminer le gain de masse relatif dû à l'hydroxylation sur la durée de vie de l'artéfact (Mf) et la vitesse à laquelle le gain de masse à partir de l'hydroxylation se produit (α) sans l'incertitude associée à l'absorption d'eau.
