Abstract

The invention provides electrolyte compositions including a metal cation, an ionic liquid, and a chelator that coordinates the metal cation. The electrolyte compositions are advantageous as they exhibit increased ion transference, and thus increased total conductivity, relative to a pure ionic liquid electrolyte that coordinates the metal cation. The invention provides a general strategy to control the cation-anion dynamics that govern ionic liquid performance. Electrolytes of the invention may be useful for any suitable purpose, e.g., in primary and secondary batteries, supercapacitors, and solar cells.

L'invention concerne des compositions électrolytiques comprenant un cation métallique, un liquide ionique et un chélateur qui coordonne le cation métallique. Les compositions électrolytiques sont avantageuses car elles présentent un transfert ionique accru, et par conséquent une conductivité totale accrue, par rapport à un électrolyte à liquide ionique pur qui coordonne le cation métallique. L'invention fournit une stratégie générale pour réguler la dynamique cations-anions qui régit les performances des liquides ioniques. Les électrolytes selon l'invention peuvent être utiles à tout usage adapté, par exemple dans des batteries primaires et secondaires, des supercondensateurs et des cellules solaires.
